Benefits/Uses- Used popularly as a decorative houseplant which improves the air quality. In Feng Shui Rubber plant is considered as an auspicious and are believed to bring good luck and prosperity.
Growing conditions-
1. Soil- Regular houseplant
potting mix is necessary for growing Rubber plant. Well drained slightly acidic
soil is best. A mixture of potting soil, peat, sand or perlite can be used.
2. Watering- It is best to water your rubber plant in every 1-2 weeks. Do not overwater. Water thoroughly and allow the water to drain out through the drainage hole.
3. Temperature- Optimum temperature requirements for Rubber plant is between 18°C- 30°C. However they can tolerate slightly cooler temperature but are sensitive to cold air and frost.
4. Humidity- Rubber plant prefers moderate to high humidity, around 40-50%. If the leaf tip of the plant starts to turn brown it could indicates a lack in humidity.
5. Light requirements- Rubber plant likes bright indirect sunlight that is not too hot. It can survive in low light but for proper growth and to maintain foliage colour sufficient light is required.
6. Fertilization- Fertilize the Rubber plant with a water soluble houseplant fertilizer in 1-2 weeks or slow release fertilizer in every 4-6 weeks. Plants that are placed in low light should be fertilize less often.
7. Flowering- Rubber plant can produce flowers but are more unlikely to occur in houseplants which are grown in indoor conditions.
8. Important Diseases-
Leaves drooping- Drooping of leaves occur due to overwatering and insufficient lighting conditions.
Yellowing of leaves- This may occur due to excess moisture in the soil and due to fungus attack which causes powdery mildew disease. Always prune the diseased leaf to avoid more spread.
9. Important Pests- Aphids , mealy bugs, scales and spider mites can affect the plant. These insects develop following symptoms-
Leaf curling- leaf curing is mainly due to insects like aphids, mealy bugs and scales. Another reason may be due to excess moisture in the soil.
White spots- white spots on leaves are seen due to the infestation of mealy bugs and spider mites.
10. Pruning- Rubber plant don't require much pruning. If the plant become leggy then prune the plant according to the need.
11.Propagation- Rubber plant can be propagated through stem cuttings.
