The Peacock Plant, scientifically known as Calathea makoyana, is a captivating houseplant prized for its stunning foliage. Its leaves feature intricate patterns of green, cream, and purple that resemble the vibrant feathers of a peacock. While the Peacock Plant is primarily grown for its ornamental leaves, it may produce small, inconspicuous flowers that are not its main attraction. Growing Conditions-
1.Soil- Peacock plants like moist loamy soil rich in organic matter. A soil mix can be prepared with potting soil, orchid bark, charcoal, perlite and organic compost.
2.Watering- Peacock plants like lots of water but they don’t like soggy or waterlogged soil. So always check the plants before watering and try to keep the potting mix moist. Reduce watering frequency during rainy weather and winter.
3.Temperature- Peacock plants are highly sensitive to cold temperature. Plants grow well when kept in warm conditions.
4.Humidity- They prefer a humidity level about 50% or above.
5.Light requirements- These plants like filtered sunlight or shade. They generally grows well under the canopy of a tree where the plants get filtered indirect light. Plants are also very sensitive to harsh sunrays.
6.Fertilization- Fertilize the peacock plants with liquid balanced fertilizer at half strength during the spring and summer time. Reduce the frequency during winter months as the growth generally slows down during winter months.
7.Flowering- The Peacock Plant may produce small, inconspicuous flowers, but it is primarily valued for its striking foliage rather than it's blooms.
8.Important Diseases-
Browning of tips- Leaf tips of peacock plant starts browning due to lack of water. Water properly to keep the soil moist to get rid of this problem.
Yellowing of leaves- This is due to chlorine and fluoride present in the water which is applied to plants. Try to water the plants with filtered water or rain water or fresh water free from fluoride and chlorine.
9.Important Pests- As these plants prefer humid environment, they are very much susceptible to fungus gnats. They generally don't harm the plant. Other than this insects like aphids, mealy bugs, spider mites, scale are seen in peacock plants. They can easily be removed by using neem oil or insecticidal soaps.
10.Pruning & Maintenance- Peacock plants don't require regular pruning. Only remove the dead, wilted leaves time to time to keep the plant healthy. Try to repot the plants every few years when the plants gets root bounded as the plants become weak and unhealthy if they are root bounded for long time.
11.Propagation- Propagation of peacock plants can be done through Root division. Always water the plants one day before you want to take root division from the plant. Plant will get enough moisture and it will be easy to divide the root. These plants can also be propagated through seed.
