Night Blooming Jasmine, also known as Night Queen or Hasnuhana or Raat Ki Rani, is a highly fragrant flowering shrub or small tree. It is popular for its intoxicating fragrance that intensifies during the evening and night. The plant produces clusters of small, tubular white flowers that bloom predominantly at night.
Growing conditions-
1. Soil Requirement- This plant prefers well-drained soil
that is fertile and rich in organic matter. A loamy or sandy soil mix with
organic compost is ideal for this plant. One can use 30% soil, 30% sand and 35%
organic compost to prepare the potting mix for the plant.
2. Watering- Regular watering is required to keep the soil
consistently moist, but avoid overwatering as it can cause root rot. Allow the
top inch of soil to dry out before watering again.
3. Temperature- This plant thrives in warm to hot temperatures
and is sensitive to frost. It prefers temperatures between 18°C to 29°C and can
suffer damage or die if exposed to freezing temperatures.
4. Humidity- It can tolerate a range of humidity levels but
prefers moderate to high humidity. Adequate humidity helps in promoting healthy
growth and flowering.
5. Light Requirement- The plant requires full sun to partial
shade for optimal growth and flowering. It needs at least 4 to 6 hours of
direct sunlight each day.
6. Fertilization- Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) to provide essential nutrients. Night blooming jasmine can be fertilized with a weak solution of seaweed fertilizer. One can use organic fertilizer like cow dung manure once in every two weeks or apply NPK or DAP once in a month during growing season. Do not apply fertilizer when the plant is in flowering stage.
7. Flowering- It produces small, white tubular flowers that open predominantly during the evening and night. The flowers have a strong, sweet fragrance that attracts moths and other pollinators.
8. Important Disease- This plant is generally resistant to most common plant diseases. However, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or leaf spot. Ensuring good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering can help prevent these diseases.
9. Important Pests- This is a very hardy plant and it many get infected by few pests and insects. Common pests that may affect Raat Ki Rani include aphids and mealy bugs. Regularly inspect the plant for pests and apply neem oil or eucalyptus oil. Mix 4-5 drops of neem oil in 1 lt of water and spray thoroughly over the plants and under the leaves.
10. Pruning- Pruning can help maintain the shape and size of the plant and promote bushier growth. Prune after the flowering period to remove any dead or damaged branches and encourage new growth. Best pruning time is during February- march.
11. Propagation- The plant can be propagated through stem cuttings. Take 6 to 8-inch long cuttings from healthy stems, remove the lower leaves, and plant them in well-drained soil. Provide a warm and humid environment for the cuttings to root.
