Scientific Name- Nerium oleander
Family- Apocynaceae
Origin- Mediterranean region
Nerium oleander, commonly known as Oleander, can be used as
a stunning and vibrant hedge option. With its abundant clusters of colorful
flowers and glossy, lance-shaped leaves, it creates a visually striking hedge.
Oleander hedges can be pruned and shaped to maintain a formal and uniform
appearance or left to grow more naturally for a softer look. This versatile
shrub thrives in full sun and can tolerate a variety of soil conditions, making
it adaptable to different climates. Its evergreen nature ensures year-round
beauty, and the flowers come in various shades such as pink, red, white, or
yellow, adding a burst of color to the landscape.
To manage an Oleander hedge effectively-
1.Prune regularly to maintain shape and remove dead or diseased branches.
2.Water deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry
out between waterings.
3.Apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring and early
summer to promote healthy growth.
4.Control weeds around the hedge to prevent competition for
nutrients.
5.Monitor and address common pests like aphids, spider
mites, and oleander caterpillars. Spray Bacillus thuringiensis to control
oleander caterpillar and apply neem oil to control aphids and spider mites.
6.Watch for diseases like leaf spot and root rot, and take
appropriate measures like apply copper based fungicide, maintain proper
sanitation and watering.
7.Provide well-drained soil and full sun exposure.
