Bengali- Kamini
Scientific Name- Murraya paniculata
Family- Rutaceae
Origin- Southeast Asia, including regions of India, China, and Australia.
Kamini is an evergreen shrub or small tree known for its fragrant white flowers and glossy, dark green leaves. It is a popular ornamental plant, prized for its attractive appearance and delightful fragrance.
Benefits- Kamini is highly valued for its sweet and intense fragrance. The flowers of Kamini are used in making garlands, perfumes, and traditional ceremonies. It is a versatile plant that can be grown as a shrub, hedge, or trained as a small tree.
Growing Conditions-
1. Soil Requirement- Kamini prefers well-drained soil that is fertile and loamy. It can tolerate a range of soil types but thrives in slightly acidic to neutral pH.
2. Watering- Regular watering is required to keep the soil evenly moist, particularly during the warmer months. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
3. Temperature- Kamini thrives in warm to tropical climates. It prefers temperatures between 15°C to 32°C but can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures. Protect it from frost and freezing conditions.
4. Humidity- Kamini prefers moderate to high humidity levels. The plant thrives best in a humidity above 50%. It can also adapt to lower humidity conditions.
5. Light Requirement- Kamini requires full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and flowering. It needs at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day. However, it can tolerate some shade, particularly during the hottest part of the day.
6. Fertilization- Feed Kamini with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) to provide essential nutrients. Fertilizer can be applied once in 3-4 weeks during growing months.
7. Flowering- Kamini produces small, white, star-shaped flowers that are highly fragrant. The flowers appear in clusters and bloom throughout the year, with peak flowering occurring during the warmer months. The fragrance is particularly strong in the evening and at night.
8. Important Diseases- Kamini is generally resistant to most common plant diseases. However, it can be susceptible to soil nematodes and citrus greening disease.
9. Important Pests- Common pests that may affect Kamini include aphids, whiteflies, and scale insects. Scale insect suck the sap from plants and appear as fine white lines or tan, scaly bumps on leaves and stems. White fly and aphids emit honey dew which promotes sooty mold growth on leaves. Do not let water sit on the leaves to control sooty mold formation and apply neem oil or rubbing alcohol.
10.Pruning- Orange jasmine grow very quickly. So, pruning is beneficial for shaping and maintaining the size of Kamini. It is best done after the flowering period to remove dead or overgrown branches. Pruning also helps promote bushier growth and increased flowering. It is best not to remove more than one-eighth of the shrub’s total growth per year.
11. Propagation- Kamini can be propagated through stem cuttings or seeds. Stem cuttings taken from healthy plants can be rooted in well-drained soil. Seeds can be collected from mature fruits and sown in a suitable growing medium.
