Kalanchoe is a popular succulent plant known for its vibrant
and long-lasting blooms. With its thick, fleshy leaves and compact growth
habit, Kalanchoe adds a touch of color and charm to indoor and outdoor spaces,
making it a beloved choice for plant enthusiasts.
Growing Conditions-
1.Soil- Kalanchoe plants require soil with better water
draining capacity. A succulent or cactus potting mix is suitable for them. Regular potting soil with perlite or coarse sand and some organic compost works
well.
2.Watering- Kalanchoe plants are succulents and they store
water on their leaves, so they prefer infrequent but deep watering. Allow the
soil to dry out completely between waterings and then water thoroughly and let
the excess water to drain away.
3.Temperature- Kalanchoe plants prefer moderate
temperatures. They can tolerate temperatures between 15°C-29°C. Avoid exposing
them to extreme cold or frost.
4.Humidity- Kalanchoe plants prefer moderate humidity
levels, ideally around 40% to 60%, to thrive.
5. Light requirements- Kalanchoe plants require bright light
to thrive. They prefer direct sunlight for a few hours each day, but they can
also tolerate bright indirect light.
6.Fertilization- Kalanchoe plants do not require excessive
fertilization. You can use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer with a ratio of
20-20-20 or similar. Apply the fertilizer during the growing season, typically
once every 2-3 months.
7.Flowering- Kalanchoe plants bloom with clusters of small,
colorful flowers that can range in hues of red, pink, orange, yellow, and
white. They are known for their long-lasting during winter and spring month.
8.Important Diseases- Some common diseases affecting
Kalanchoe plants include powdery mildew and root rot. To manage these diseases,
ensure proper air circulation, avoid overwatering, and treat with appropriate
fungicides( Copper/ Sulphur based for powdery mildew).
9.Important Pests- Kalanchoe plants are generally resistant to
pests and diseases, but they can occasionally be affected by common succulent
pests such as mealybugs or spider mites. They can be controlled by using neem
oil or insecticidal soap.
10.Pruning- Pruning is not usually necessary for Kalanchoe
plants. Only remove spent flowers or leggy stems to maintain a compact
appearance.
11.Propagation- Kalanchoe plants are easy to propagate. They
can be propagated from stem cuttings or by separating offsets (small plantlets
that grow around the base of the parent plant). Allow the cuttings or offsets
to callus for a few days before planting them in a well-drained potting mix.
