Plant Description:
Common Name- Ixora/ Rongon
Scientific Name- Ixora coccinea
Family- Rubiaceae
Origin- Regions of Asia including India, Malaysia , Sri Lanka.
Ixora is a tropical flowering plant cherished for its
clusters of vibrant and showy flowers, available in hues of red, orange, pink,
and yellow. With its glossy green leaves and compact growth habit, ixora adds a
touch of exotic beauty to gardens and landscapes.
Growing Conditions-
1.Soil- Ixora plants prefer well-draining soil that is rich
in organic matter. A mixture of loam, peat moss, and compost works well. Plant
it in soil rather than small pot to achieve its vigorous growth.
2.Watering- Ixora plants like to be consistently moist but
not waterlogged. Water them deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry. They
can tolerate short periods of drought but perform best with regular watering.
Avoid overwatering.
3.Temperature- Ixora plants thrive in warm and tropical
climates. They are native to tropical regions of Asia and require temperatures
above 15°C to grow well. They prefer temperatures between 21°C-32°C.
4.Humidity- Ixora plants prefer high humidity levels,
ideally around 60% to 70%, to support their optimal growth and flowering.
5.Light Requirements- Ixora plants require plenty of bright
sunlight to bloom profusely. They prefer full sun or partial shade with at
least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. In hot climates, some afternoon
shade can help protect the plant from scorching.
6. Fertilization- Regular fertilization is essential for
promoting healthy growth and abundant flowering. Use a balanced, slow-release
fertilizer or a water-soluble. Apply the fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the
growing season.
7.Flowering- Ixora plants typically bloom during the warm
months of spring and summer. They produce dense clusters of vibrant flowers in
various colors, such as red, pink, orange, and yellow. During flowering, use a
balanced fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content (such as a 10-30-20 ratio)
for Ixora plants and avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.
8.Important Diseases- Leaf spot is a common disease in Ixora
plants, manage it by removing and destroying infected leaves, improving
airflow, and apply copper based or any broad spectrum fungicide.
9.Important pests- Ixora plants can be susceptible to
aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. Use neem oil or broad-spectrum
insecticide to control these pests.
10.Pruning- Pruning is important for maintaining a compact
and bushy Ixora plant and to stimulate new growth. It is typically done after
the flowering season.
11.Propagation- Ixora plants can be propagated through stem
cuttings. Take a healthy stem cutting, remove lower leaves, dip in rooting
hormone, and plant in well-drained soil. Keep it moist and in a warm, humid
environment until roots develop.
