Package- A healthy Bougainvillea Plant (Without pot)
Plant description:
Common Name- Bougainvillea
Scientific Name- Bougainvillea spp.
Family- Nyctaginaceae
Origin- Bougainvillea is native to South America, particularly Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.
Bougainvillea is a vibrant and showy flowering plant known for its abundant and colorful bracts that surround its small, inconspicuous flowers. It is a popular choice for gardens and landscapes in warm climates due to its stunning display of colors.
4. Humidity- Bougainvillea plants are adaptable to different humidity levels and can tolerate both dry and humid conditions.
6. Fertilization- Regular fertilization is important for bougainvillea plants. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 2-3 months during the growing season (spring and summer). Alternatively, use a water-soluble fertilizer every 2 weeks. Fertilize bougainvillea with high phosphorus content during early spring and mid-summer for abundant blooms.
7. Flowering- Bougainvillea is known for its vibrant and long-lasting bracts that come in various colors, including shades of pink, purple, red, orange, and white. The bracts provide the colorful display, while the small flowers within them are generally inconspicuous.
8. Important Diseases- Bougainvillea can be susceptible to various fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew, leaf spot, and root rot. Proper spacing, good air circulation, and avoiding overwatering can help prevent these diseases.
9. Important Pests- Common pests that affect bougainvillea include aphids, mealybugs, Bougainvillea looper caterpillar and spider mites. Small brown, green or yellow caterpillar chew the edge of the leaves and tender shoots. Young plants can be affected more by looper caterpillar rather than mature plant. Regularly inspect the plant for pests and apply neem oil to control these insects.
10. Pruning and Maintenance- Pruning is essential for maintaining the shape and size of bougainvillea plants. Prune after each flowering cycle to remove dead or spent branches and promote new growth. Pruning is generally done during late winter or early spring. Be cautious of the plant's thorny nature and use gloves when pruning. Bougainvillea is a fast growing plant, so repotting is necessary when the plant is outgrown the existing pot.
11. Propagation- Bougainvillea can be propagated through stem cuttings or from seeds. Stem cuttings taken from mature branches can be rooted in well-draining soil or water. Seeds can be sown in a seed-starting mix and kept warm until germination occurs. The propagation of bougainvillea from seeds is difficult as compared to cuttings.
