Plant Description:
Common Name- Areca palm, Bamboo palm, Cane palm, Butterfly Palm
Scientific Name-Dypsis lutescens
Family- Arecaceae
Origin- Eastern Madagascar
Areca Palm is an evergreen perennial, most
popularly grown as a houseplant for its lush green foliage. It is a low maintenance plant
and easy to care.
Benefits/Uses-Absorb toxic
substances from the air and purify the air. It is mainly used for
decorative purpose for its vibrant green, soft foliage.
Growing Conditions-
1. Soil- A well-drained peat based soil
mix is suitable for growing areca palm.
2. Watering- Areca palm needs moist soil for proper
growth .It is sensitive to overwatering. Watering should be done when
the top inch of soil become dry. During the winter months reduce watering to
avoid overwatering.
3. Temperature-Areca Palm prefers temperature range between 18°C -
24°C. They can tolerate slightly lower temperature but may suffer if exposed to
a temperature below 13°C.
4. Humidity-It prefers a humid environment
with an approximate humidity range between 50%- 60%.
5. Light requirements-This plant thrive in bright
indirect light .It prefers a spot with filtered sunlight. Insufficient light
can cause the plant to become leggy and growth is also reduced.
6. Fertilization-Water soluble liquid
houseplant fertilizer can be applied once in every 4 weeks during spring and
summer months.
7. Flowering- Areca palms blooms
mainly in summer. It produces small, bright yellow coloured flowers.
8. Important Diseases-
Root rot- Overwatering and poorly drained soil can cause root rot
problem. Symptoms include yellowing fronds, reduced growth and a foul smell
from the soil.
Wilt- Fungus causes yellowing and wilting
of leaves. Affected fronds develop brown and black streaks.
Leaf tip burn- This can be caused by overwatering, under watering,
chilled air, compacted roots, poor soil conditions.
9. Important Pests- Areca Palms are
more prone to attack by mealy bugs and red spider mites. Mottled
yellowish leaves, webbing between leaves are a sign of the presence of
spider mites.
To get rid of spider mites use a showerhead to spray neem oil with
water underside of the leaves.
Apply rubbing alcohol, neem oil or chemical insecticide containing
Thiamethoxam to control mealy bugs.
10. Pruning- Areca palm is a low maintenance
plant and easy to care. Repot the plant in every couple of years in fresh potting
medium. Prune occasionally only to remove Browned frond or diseased and
damaged canes.
11. Propagation- Propagation of areca palm can be done by Root division. It can be done anytime of the year but spring time is preferable as stronger plants can be grown during spring.
